PIC4TB on the 1st Photonic Integration Week

As mentioned in previous posts, the 1st Photonic Integration Week took place in Valencia (Spain) at the Universitat Politècnica de València from Monday January 16th to Friday January 20th, 2017. The event combined industrial presentations, business to business meetings, scientific and technical speakers and training activities.

The event started with two Workshops (2.5 days) under the framework of the project H2020 PICs4All (Photonic Integration Circuits Accessible to Everyone) and the Spanish Network of Excellence PIC4TB (Photonic Integration Circuits for Telecommunications and Bio Sciences).

Industrial keynote speakers provided the commercial perspective of use of photonic integration technologies at different positions of the supply chain, from component manufacturers and system integrators to end users of these technologies.

Scientific invited speakers presented their latest achievements and prospects of use of these technologies in research and development, and caveats for the design aimed at Bio and Telecom applications were given in 4 master lessons by the members of the PIC4TB network.

The most of the invited speakers participating in the event belong to the industry sector (53%), followed by the academy (37%) and clusters in photonics (10%) as shown in the following graph, where it is also specified the work activities and the application fields from speakers.

The Southern European Cluster in Photonics and Optics (SECPhO) organized business to business meetings facilitating the cooperation between companies and researchers. SECPhO also organized an activity where attendees located their logo in a map of coordinates pointing their activity on the value chain on several application fields.

Once the speakers coming from industry presented their achievements and prospects of use of PIC technologies in research and development, the members of the PIC4TB network gave 4 master lessons on practical design considerations for the development of Photonic Integrated Circuits for Bio and Telecom applications.

The Workshop was followed by a 2.5 days training on the Design of Photonic Integrated Circuits (PICs) given by the design company VLC Photonics.

Kick-off meeting of the thematic network of excellence on “Photonic Integrated Circuits for Telecom & Bio Sciences (PIC4TB)

Valencia, 28th of April 2016
Nine research groups have teamed up in the PIC4TB network, aiming at integrating the research efforts in Spain on photonic integrated circuits design for telecom and bio applications, broken into four objectives: 1) to educate the next generation of photonic integrated circuit designers, 2) to integrate the research groups and their technical activities, 3) to create a common pool of resources and 4) to raise awareness on these technologies and their applications.

The parnters are Universitat Politècnica de Valencia (UPV), Universidad de Málaga (UMA), Universidad Carlos III de Madrid group, (UC3M), Centre Tecnològic de Telecomunicacions de Catalunya (CTTC), Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), Universidad de Zaragoza (UNIZAR), Catalan Institute for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (CIN2), and Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM).

The network activities will result into two 1 week events, consisting on tutorials, workshops and training activities aimed at, but not restricted to, MSc / PhD level students. The first event, the PIC4TB Winter Meeting, will take place in Valencia, tentatively between the 16-20th of January, 2017. The meeting will bring together key academic and industrial partners in the topics of the network. The event details and registration will be announced by the fall of 2016.
